Ísorka credits

At the end of March, Ísorka reached a major milestone by completing the certification process for carbon credits under the VM0038 methodology from the international Verra standard. This methodology quantifies how electric charging station infrastructure reduces greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions compared to fossil fuel-powered vehicles.

The VM0038 methodology and its certification process apply globally, covering all electric charging stations for Light Duty Vehicles (LDVs). It establishes a standardized approach to calculating GHG reductions from displaced fossil fuel emissions and certifies carbon units based on the emissions prevented through the installation, operation, and use of EV charging stations, as well as fleet charging.

Ísorka is the first company in Europe to achieve carbon credit certification under this methodology—an important step in Iceland’s sustainability efforts and its commitment to reaching net zero by 2030. Since 2016, Ísorka has implemented strict traceability measures across its operations, ensuring the credibility and transparency of this project.

This initiative is expected to prevent an average of 37,500 tons of CO₂ annually, amounting to a total reduction of 375,000 tons of CO₂ over the entire certification period (2021-2030), with certified carbon credits issued based on these verified reductions.

This project marks a turning point for Iceland, as it is the first in the country to certify active, immediately tradable carbon credits—providing businesses and organizations with a direct and responsible way to offset emissions. This differs from traditional local forestry projects, where credits often remain pending for years.

Several leading companies, including Verkís engineering firm, BL car dealership, Pipar/TBWA advertising agency, and Hertz Iceland, have already committed to purchasing these certified carbon credits as part of their net zero strategies.
