Today, Pure North Recycling is the only company in Iceland that fully recycles plastic. In the recycling process, contaminated plastic waste is transformed into plastic pallets, which are sold for the production of new plastic products both domestically and internationally.
The company is four years old and recycles the majority of the hay bale plastic that is generated in Iceland, approximately 2,000 tons annually. Pure North Recycling is taking its first steps in recycling hard plastics and aims to also recycle packaging plastics. Currently, 95% of unrecycled packaging plastic is exported. There is significant potential for improvement, as it is estimated that for every ton of plastic recycled, around 1.8 tons of oil is saved.
