Súrefni’s May 2022 article described an emerging Icelandic carbon credit market, with relatively few projects outside forestry. It presented credits as a way to connect climate project developers with the finance needed for implementation.
The article distinguished projects that avoid greenhouse gas emissions from those that remove greenhouse gases already in the atmosphere. It noted that forestry removals generally take considerable time to develop and referred to several projects then planned by Súrefni, including another phase of Súrefnisskógurinn anticipated for 2024.
It highlighted independent certification as part of creating certified credits. The article also discussed potential international market opportunities linked to Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.
For companies considering participation, Súrefni recommended beginning with an examination of their emissions, calculating their footprint and identifying opportunities to reduce it.
